The Making of John Mayer’s ‘Born & Raised’ Artwork
Several years ago, I created a short profile documentary about UK based David A. Smith; a traditional sign-writer specialising in high quality ornamental hand-crafted reverse glass signs and decorative silvered and gilded mirrors.
David recently produced a wonderful turn-of-the-century, trade-card styled Album Cover for popular American singer/songwriter John Mayer. ‘Born & Raised’ is the fusion of Mayer’s exceptional blues/rock music and Smith’s outstanding designs.
My new film captures the ‘Behind The Scenes’ creation of the ‘Born & Raised’ and ‘Queen of California’ artwork, as well as 2 unique reverse glass panels, hand-crafted in England by David A. Smith.

Brother and sister glass artists Mark Tranter and Patricia Tranter-Edmonds with Lee James reveal traditional glassblowing techniques, behind the scenes work and their inspirations when creating a wide variety of unique studio/art glass for the trade and retail commissions.

David A Smith is a name that has become synonymous in Sign-Writing and Glass gilding circles, with high quality, hand crafted reverse glass signs and decorative silvered and gilded mirrors.
In this short documentary, we reveal behind the scenes work, techniques and visions that Dave uses when carrying out his passion as a glass embosser – One of the few remaining traditional UK glass artists.
When starting this project I already had a soundtrack in mind. I discovered an amazing sound composer Tony Higgins (junior85) that just fit that ‘Glass’ feel. You can download his work here.
